Maria Maciocia’s golden retriever Sandy has become an overnight internet sensation since the heartwarming footage was shared on Facebook.
Fitness and life coach Maria now lives in the United States but returned to Markinch at the weekend to visit family.
The video shows Sandy instantly sensing her presence in the house and feverishly searching before he finds her hiding in an upstairs bedroom.
His frantic reaction and sheer joy has now been seen by over 19 million people since Maria’s video was picked up by viral Facebook page UNILAD.
Maria, who has blogged about personal problems in her life, says Sandy is her “best friend” and has been with her “through thick and thin”.
She added: “Waking up to this beauty all this week is my favorite part of coming home! Sandy was born in Mexico, raised in California and now he’s retired in Scotland.”
She continued: “He’s been to hell and back with me. Gave me reason to get out of bed during my darkest moments. I feel forever in debt to him but my parents have given a home in Scotland that I was unable to provide for him after I left my abusive marriage. He’s a very special dog.”
Dog lovers from all over the world have left comments saying how they enjoyed watching the pair’s reunion.

Maria and Sandy celebrated their new-found fame with a walk up Falkland Hill on Wednesday, with Sandy’s photos gaining hundreds more likes from his fans.
Maria added: “Glad you all enjoyed the video.”
