VIENNA – Former Austrian chancellor Werner Faymann, who quit his post on Monday following a lack of party support, is reportedly considering taking on an EU-related post in Brussels.

In an interview with the newspaper Oesterreich, Faymann said he would like to take „two, three months to recover from all the stress and do nothing,” adding he will take some time to think, and „consider new goals.”

He is however considering a role in Brussels, „something in the context of the EU,” for which he said offers have already come in the past.

„I will see if something there takes my fancy. I would have an interest in becoming politically active on a European level,” the former chancellor and Social Democrats (SPO) leader said.

Commenting on the SPO, he said he hopes it „returns to unity — it has so many great members”.

He said that while he still had the support of a majority of party members, without complete support in „difficult times” it would have been „irresponsible” to continue.

He also confirmed that he would be „completely withdrawing” from Austrian politics.
