The Golden Globe awards are a few hours away, which means we’re just under the wire to get our Oscar nomination predictions in without being influenced by the Globe winners. Although there are some very clear pack leaders of the 2016 awards season (namely Spotlight and Mad Max: Fury Road) some categories were nearly impossible to slim down — especially Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Picture.
These predictions are pretty conservative — after all, they are based on what I think will happen, not what I hope will happen, though there may be some overlap. Since after much hemming and hawing, I couldn’t justify Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a Best Picture nominee even though I think the Academy will choose ten, I predicted a Best Director nod for J.J. Abrams, which I haven’t seen many others do. I just can’t see The Force Awakens walking away without any recognition in the non-technical awards, which is what my predictions were limited to. I also couldn’t in good faith ignore Tangerine, though it seems most prognosticators think the Academy will. Mya Taylor’s performance was just too affecting to leave out, even in one of the most crowded categories.
The 2016 Oscar nominations will be announced Thursday, January 14.
