CMV Vaccine Development Moves Forward in New Monkey Model; The CBCD Reviews a Report
CMV is shown to cross the placenta in primates other than humans.
Researchers with Duke Medicine have shown for the first time that “CMV is shown to cross the placenta in primates other than humans,” according to a report on ScienceDaily.com. (1) This is important because “this finding … establishes the first primate model that researchers can use to study mother-to-fetus CMV infections and spur development of potential vaccine approaches.” (1)
Why are health professionals excited about the idea of an effective vaccine against the CMV? The reason is that “Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the leading infectious cause of birth defects worldwide, but scientists have been frustrated in their efforts to develop a vaccine to protect against infections.” (1) However, the Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) reminds the public that developing an effective, therapeutic vaccine against CMV and gaining FDA approval takes time. Until the new vaccine undergoes human clinical trials, and the vaccine gains FDA approved, the CBCD recommends that infected individuals take Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR, which are CMV remedies backed by clinical studies.
The formula of Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the CBCD in two clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines. The studies showed that the Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin formula is effective against the herpes family of viruses, including the human cytomegalovirus (CMV). The clinical studies were published in the peer reviewed, medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy, the first, in a special edition on Advances in Antiviral Drugs. Study authors wrote that, “individuals infected with the CMV … reported a safe decrease in their symptoms following treatment with Gene-Eden-VIR.” (2) The study authors also wrote that, “we observed a statistically significant decrease in the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms.” (2)
Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin are natural antiviral dietary supplements. Their formula contains five natural ingredients: Selenium, Camellia Sinesis Extract, Quercetin, Cinnamomum Extract, and Licorice Extract. The first ingredient is a trace element, and the other four are plant extracts. Each ingredient and its dose was chosen through a scientific approach. Scientists at polyDNA, the company that invented and patented the formula, scanned thousands of scientific and medical papers published in various medical and scientific journals, and identified the safest and most effective natural ingredients against latent viruses.
To date, Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR are the only natural antiviral products on the market with published clinical studies that support their claims.
“A huge impediment to CMV vaccine development has been our lack of ability to determine what immune responses would be needed to protect against mother-to-fetus transmission. This requires good animal models, where we can manipulate each arm of the immune system to evaluate its role in congenital infection. Simple approaches to vaccine development, such as creating a weakened virus to trigger immunity, have failed, because the virus has evolved alongside humans to elude the immune system. So having a non-human primate model – something of a higher order than guinea pigs – became imperative.” (1) – Dr. Sallie R. Permar, M.D., Duke Human Vaccine Institute
What treatments are currently available against the cytomegalovirus?
“Several drugs are approved for the treatment of CMV infections in immunocompromised individuals. These drugs include ganciclovir, its oral prodrug valganciclovir, cidofovir, foscavir and fomivirsen. However, the use of these drugs in immunocompetent individuals is limited by their toxicity, poor oral bioavailability, modest efficacy, and the development of drug resistance.” (2) There are also two natural CMV remedies with a clinically proven formula.
In light of the fact that there are no vaccines against the CMV currently on the market, the CBCD recommends that individuals infected with the latent CMV take Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR against the virus.
